Porta Romana, Saturnia
Facts and practical information
The Roman Gate of Saturnia is an ancient gateway to the fortified village of the same name in the municipality of Manciano, which opens on the southern side of the Walls of Saturnia along the ancient route of the Via Clodia that is still clearly visible.
The gate is part of the oldest portion of the walls, which date back to Roman times, who founded a settlement there, not far from pre-existing Etruscan necropolises. It is the only one remaining of the four original Roman gateways.
Porta Romana was partially modified as early as 82 B.C. during the extension of the Roman walls. However, its present appearance is mainly due to the reconstruction carried out by the Aldobrandeschi in medieval times and the subsequent restoration by the Sienese during the 15th century.
The door consists of stone masonry structures and is characterized by a double round-arched opening on the inner side that differs from a single-arched opening on the outer side; stylistic elements traceable to various historical phases can be seen at the door.
