Porta Santi Quaranta, Treviso
Facts and practical information
Porta Santi Quaranta is one of the three gates in the sixteenth-century walls of Treviso. It is located at the end of borgo Cavour. In the past it provided access into the city from the west.
It takes its name from the nearby church named after the Forty Martyrs of Sebaste, today's St. Agnes.
The present gateway was built in 1516, possibly based on a design by Alessandro Leopardi, by the Venetian podestà Andrea Vendramin, who christened it "Porta Vendramina" and affixed a self-celebrating plaque to it. This did not please the Council of Ten, who changed the name and had the inscription removed.
