Schloss Planta, Merano
Facts and practical information
Planta Castle is a manor house of medieval origin located in Maia Alta in the municipality of Merano.
The original core of the castle consisted of a casatorre that became the property of Ulrich von Greifen and his consort in 1284. The building remained in the hands of the von Greifen family, to whom we owe the old name, until its extinction in the 15th century.
It later passed from hand to hand among various owners, including Hans Jakob von Völs-Colonna. The latter had considerable building work done to make it more luxurious, most likely including the construction of the corner turrets still visible today.
The castle's current name is due to Rudolf von Planta-Wildenberg, who settled there in 1619 after he was forced to flee Switzerland following a death sentence for political reasons. Despite subsequent changes in ownership, the manor still retained this toponym.
The castle is currently privately owned and cannot be visited.
