Janiculum, Rome

Perched on a hill in the Eternal City, the Janiculum (or Gianicolo in Italian) offers one of the most breathtaking views of Rome, Italy. As one of the famed seven hills of Rome, the Janiculum is located on the western bank of the Tiber River, rising above the historic district of Trastevere. Every day at noon, a single cannon fires a blank shot from the Janiculum, a tradition dating back to the 19th century. This daily event, which once served to synchronize the city's bells and clocks, continues to startle and delight unsuspecting visitors.

The hill is also home to the beautiful church of San Pietro in Montorio, believed to be built on the site of St. Peter's crucifixion, and the Fontana dell'Acqua Paola, a magnificent fountain that marks the terminus of an ancient aqueduct.
