Church of Sant'Antonio Abate, Orosei
Facts and practical information
The church of Sant'Antonio Abate is a religious building located in Orosei, a town in east-central Sardinia. It is consecrated to Catholic worship and is part of the parish of San Giacomo Maggiore, diocese of Nuoro.
The building, built with volcanic stone in different phases between the 14th and 15th centuries, rests on an earlier Romanesque structure, of which a small part of the floor is visible, while the walls have ancient 15th-century frescoes with scenes from the life of Jesus and some saints.
The church is part of a large complex that houses a medieval tower from the Pisan period and a series of cumbessias.
The titular church, which must have been a palatine church, has a pictorial cycle dated to the 14th century, of great interest because of the probable commissioning by the judges of Arborea, who had this hamlet even before 1350.
