Nautineum Stralsund, Stralsund
Facts and practical information
The Nautineum in the Hanseatic city of Stralsund was opened in 1999 as a branch of the Stralsund Marine Museum on the island of Dänholm. It belongs to the German Maritime Museum Foundation.
Exhibitions on the topics of fishing, marine research, whale research, hydrography and sea waterways are shown in halls and outdoors on the exhibition grounds, which cover more than two hectares. Thus, shipbuilding in Stralsund as well as fishing on the Baltic Sea and the Bodden are intensively highlighted.
Exhibits include a restored Zeesen boat, but also the German underwater laboratory Helgoland and the first German underwater station BAH 1. Germany's first manned research submersible Geo was also on display here from the mid-1990s until it was moved to the Ozeaneum Stralsund.
Since 2012, the submersible Shark Observer Vehicle was on permanent loan from the Sharkproject organization; scientists used it to observe the behavior of great white sharks off South Africa in 2006 and 2007. This submersible, as well as the BAH-1, was loaned to the Westfälisches Landesmuseum in Münster for one year starting in August 2016.
The Nautineum is the only place in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern approved for the dissection of whales. Spectators are allowed to attend. More than a thousand spectators came to the dissection of a fin whale found near Rügen in 2005.
Due to lack of visitors, the Nautineum was open only on Tuesdays since spring 2016. Since 2017, the exhibition is open daily from May to October from 10 am to 5 pm.
