Schloss Schwarzburg
Facts and practical information
Schwarzburg Castle is a Baroque castle complex, nowadays mostly still in ruins, in the municipality of the same name in the Saalfeld-Rudolstadt district, about 65 km southeast of the Thuringian state capital Erfurt. Built on a ridge jutting out from the northwest into the valley of the Schwarza River and sloping steeply on three sides, the former ancestral home of the counts and later princes of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt dominates the region. As a result of extensive demolition work in the period from 1940 to 1942 and subsequent decades of neglect, only a few buildings have been preserved in their substance, including the ruins of the main building, the armory and the Emperor's Hall, which is open to the public. Schloss Schwarzburg has been undergoing extensive restoration for many years and can now be used for events.
