St. Peter's Church, Bochum

Petrikirche is a Protestant church building at Wiemelhauser Straße 255 in Bochum-Wiemelhausen. It belongs to the Evangelical Church of Westphalia. It was built from 1901 to 1903 according to plans of the Bochum architect Heinrich Robert in the neo-Gothic style. The interior design was based on the so-called Wiesbaden program, which envisaged one-room churches centered on the altar, pulpit and organ.

The Petri Church has been a listed building since 1989. In 2011, an open-cast rupture occurred in the area of the church after an expert report by the Bochumer Studienkreis had already ordered the closure of the church in 2010 due to the threat of an open-cast rupture. The restoration costs were estimated at 1 million euros in 2008 and increased again as a result of the open-cast rupture in 2011. An air-raid tunnel and a mining tunnel were backfilled at a cost of 350,000 euros. Afterwards, the building was initially used again, but was shut down at the end of 2015 due to damage in the roof area. An expert report from 2017 determined that the roof was not stable. The parish lacks the funds for renovation.

The Evangelische Kirchengemeinde Bochum-Wiemelhausen was formed in 2011 by reuniting the Evangelische Melanchthonkirchengemeinde Bochum and the Evangelische Petrikirchengemeinde Bochum, which had already formed one congregation until 1965.
