Philippus-Kirche, Düsseldorf
Facts and practical information
Philippuskirche is a Protestant church in the Lörick district of Düsseldorf.
The church building was designed by the Düsseldorf architect Hans Junghanns and consecrated on Advent 1, 1964. It was named after the apostle Philippus. The church is located on the border to Oberkassel and the Heerdt industrial belt, which runs along Hansaallee, and forms the entrance to the then growing "new" Lörick. The old town center, Alt-Lörick, has a village character and is clearly distant. The nave, in the plan of a ship, has a bow and stern and is bordered on the left by a pond. Almost all rooms have generous window fronts and exits to the interior terrace, the water area and the garden.
A reminiscence of the time of the steel processing industry directly in front of the church are the two doors made of chrome-nickel steel designed by Ewald Mataré student Friederich Werthmann, which contrast with the glass front of the building and are reminiscent of Lörick as a former steel location due to their manufacture at the former Böhler cast steel plant. The baptismal font is made of a similar material to the chrome-nickel steel doors of the church.
In the 37 m high tower, visible from afar, hang four bells bearing the following inscriptions: "Come and see!", "I am the way", "I am the truth" and "I am the life". The two-manual organ with 23 stops was built by the Hamburg firm Rudolf von Beckerath Orgelbau.
Due to the decreasing number of parishioners, the church was abandoned. The service of disownment was held on September 29, 2019.
