Stünenburg, Iserlohn
Facts and practical information
The Stünenburg was a lowland castle in the district of Obergrüne of Iserlohn in the Märkischer Kreis in North Rhine-Westphalia in the valley of the Grüner Bach, 18 meters above the valley floor. It was located on the left bank of the brook at about 220 meters above sea level between the paths "Stünenburg" and "Alter Grüner Talweg" and was probably destroyed in the 15th century.
Based on surface investigations in 1983 by Wilhelm Bleicher, the former director of the Hagen Museum of Local History in Hohenlimburg Castle, which were coordinated with the Westphalian Museum of Archaeology, it is assumed that the ground plan of the castle was rectangular and secured on three sides by moats. On the valley side, the castle was secured by the steep slope. There were probably three building units with a walled courtyard. In the inner courtyard there was probably a multi-storey residential tower.
Archaeological findings also suggest that the castle existed between the 12th and 15th centuries. The few remaining remains, together with the castle square, have been protected as a ground monument since May 16, 1988, and are of importance for further archaeological research. One of the most revealing finds unearthed during excavations on the site in 1914 was a bronze spherical hollow vessel with a head lid. Another special find was an iron horseman's spur dated to the 14th/15th century.
