Rohrbacher Schlößchen, Heidelberg
Facts and practical information
Rohrbach Castle, popularly known as Rohrbacher Schlösschen or Altes Schlösschen, is located in the middle of the Heidelberg district of Rohrbach. It is located there in a park on the grounds of the Heidelberg Thorax Clinic on what is now Parkstraße.
The Rohrbacher Schlösschen is a rectangular, two-story building of classicism with a three-axis central risalit, which is decorated with a frieze in the upper part.
The building was built around 1770 by the later and last Duke Charles II August of Palatinate-Zweibrücken as a hunting lodge with a landscaped park. The planner of the original palace park can no longer be determined; after the palace changed to Baden ownership, the park was redesigned according to the plans of the garden architect Friedrich Ludwig Sckell. In 1803 the castle passed into the possession of Margravine Amalie of Baden, who had it transformed into the state still visible today by alterations according to plans by Friedrich Weinbrenner.
From 1920, the Schlösschen was used as a tuberculosis hospital, having already served as a military hospital during the First World War. The hospital eventually became the property of the LVA Baden and developed into a large specialist clinic for thoracic surgery and tuberculosis.
Today, the building is no longer used for direct hospital operations, but for administrative and training purposes. The exterior of the castle, which is located in the publicly accessible hospital grounds, can be easily visited, and the hall, which was completely restored in 2005, can be rented for events by the hospital administration.
