Stadtbad, Chemnitz
Facts and practical information
The city baths on Mühlenstraße were designed in 1925 by the city's construction director Fred Otto in the New Building style. It was intended to replace the Hedwigbad built in 1866/1867 on what was then Hedwigstraße, which no longer met the needs of the rapidly growing city of Chemnitz.
With the groundbreaking ceremony on May 22, 1929, work began on the construction of the new municipal baths. Construction stalled from 1930 to 1934 due to the turbulence of the world economic crisis, so that the baths could only be opened on March 27, 1935 in the presence of the Saxon NSDAP Gauleiter Martin Mutschmann. At its time, it was one of the largest and most modern indoor swimming pools in Europe with its 50-meter-long pool. In 1983, the building was renovated. In 1984, the architect Karl-Heinz Barth was awarded the Architecture Prize of the German Democratic Republic and the Schinkel Medal of the Association of Architects of the GDR for the successful execution.
The figurative decoration of the city pool, for example the flag pedestals with the groups of aquatic animals at the entrance, is the work of Bruno Ziegler.
During the flood of 2002, the basement of the city pool was flooded.
In August 2010, the bath was reopened after a longer renovation phase. However, the renovation focused mainly on the sanitary facilities, as the bath may hardly be changed due to the requirements of the monument protection. Shortly thereafter, the basement with the technical facilities flooded during the 2010 flood and the bath had to close again for several months for the necessary repairs.
During the 2013 flood, the technical systems in the basement of the bath were again affected, so that the bath had to close for several months.
