Rocca, Arquata del Tronto
Facts and practical information
The Fortress of Arquata del Tronto is a medieval fortress erected as a stronghold in charge of territorial control, with tactical and defensive functions. The mighty structure rises 777 m asl on the cliff in the area north of the urban center of Arquata del Tronto, the seat of the municipality of the same name in the Marche region, in the territory of the province of Ascoli Piceno.
A typical example of 13th-century military architecture of the Umbria-Marches Apennines, compact in appearance, isolated and austere, it is surrounded by a green park furrowed by paths and lanes. The fortress was state-owned until January 16, 1890, when, due to its precarious condition, it became essential to transfer it, through a regular deed of sale, to the municipality of Arquata. The property transfer contract was later recognized by a Decree of the Ministry of Finance dated May 2, 1890.
The fortress has been classified as a National Monument of Italy since the year 1902.
