Chiesa di San Cesello, Cagliari
Facts and practical information
San Cesello is a church in Cagliari located on San Giovanni Street in the Villanova neighborhood.
The small church was erected in 1702 to be the seat of the coopers' gremio, until then housed in the church of St. Anthony. The church arose near the Cabaňa or Cavagna gate that connected Villanova to the nearby countryside, a place identified by popular tradition as the site where the soldier Lussorio along with two children named Cesello and Camerino, later all three canonized, were martyred in the fourth century. However, the Cooper church was dedicated to Cesellus alone, for reasons unknown. Since 1951 the temple has been entrusted to the congregation of the Sacramentine Sisters, who live cloistered in the small building adjacent to the church.
The appearance of the church of San Cesello is that of a country church, with a flat-ended facade surmounted by a bell gable, portal with an ogival arch and a small oculus. The interior is equally simple, with a rectangular plan, single nave and barrel vault. The raised chancel is dominated by a rich 18th-century wooden altar in Baroque style. The canvas housed on the right side of the altar is particularly interesting because it depicts the Cavagna gate, demolished in the 19th century, as it must have looked in the 18th century.
