Chiesa di Sancto Gerhardo, Monza
Facts and practical information
The church of Sancto Gerhardo is a religious building in Monza attached to the old Umberto I Hospital of San Gerardo. The church, designed together with the hospital itself by architect Ercole Balossi-Merlo, was built in 1894 and inaugurated in 1896. It is dedicated to St. Gerard, known as the Dyers.
It is a small building of neoclassical style with a barely noticeable pronaos surmounted by a tympanum and with two granite columns on either side, overlooking Magenta Street, while a secondary side entrance gives access to the hospital area.
The church was conceived as the chapel-oratory of the adjoining hospital, later also named after St. Gerard of the Dyers, patron saint of Monza. It is not to be confused with the older Church of San Gerardo "al corpo" located in the small square of the same name accessed from Via Lecco, nor with the even older little church of San Gerardino built in the courtyard of the Monza saint's paternal home near the ancient San Gerardo bridge and even earlier dedicated to St. Ambrose, patron saint of Milan.
The image of St. Gerard of the Dyers seen in the altarpiece on the altar is an encaustic work by Monza painter Gerardo Bianchi.
