Battistero di San Giovanni, Canosa di Puglia
Facts and practical information
The baptistery of St. John of Canosa di Puglia is a dodecagonal building with four chambers on the main axes, forming the arms of a Greek cross, and four corridors alternating with it, all facing the central room with one and two doors, respectively. In the center of the building are the remains of a heptagonal baptismal font. The area of the basin was covered by a dome. The baptistery was a building of great value, not only because of its considerable size and articulation of spaces but also because it was endowed with a vast decorative apparatus, of which few but significant traces have been found: in the basin glass tesserae covered with gold foil and fragments of the floor mosaic, decorated with four-pointed stars, the arms of which are rendered by lozenges, alternating with rectangles.
