Basilica di San Sabino, Canosa di Puglia
Facts and practical information
The Basilica of San Sabino is the main place of Catholic worship in Canosa di Puglia.
It was built in the Lombard period at the behest of Duke Arechi II, after the abandonment of the early Christian sites of San Leucio and San Pietro. Initially dedicated to Saints John and Paul, it was dedicated to St. Sabinus on Sept. 7, 1101, by Pope Paschal II, some four hundred years after the removal of the saint's remains to the crypt below by Bishop Peter on Aug. 1 in an unspecified year of the 8th century. It was recognized as a cathedral in 1916 by Pope Benedict XV.
