Festung Werk Mitterberg
Facts and practical information
Fort Mitterberg is an Austro-Hungarian World War I fort located near the village of Sexten, in the Sexten Valley, Alta Pusteria, South Tyrol. The fort belongs to the large system of Austrian fortifications on the Italian border.
The fort was erected in the years 1885-1889, at an elevation of 1575 meters, and together with Fort Haideck barred access to the Sexten Valley to Italian troops who would have wanted to enter the Austro-Hungarian Empire from the Monte Croce di Comelico Pass.
The fort is a large structure, arranged on three levels, armored with granite blocks, defended by several fixed artillery emplacements and frontal defensive rampart toward the Monte Croce di Comelico Pass.
