Gola su Gorropu, National Park of the Gulf of Orosei and Gennargentu
Facts and practical information
Gorropu Gorge is a deep canyon located in Supramonte, Sardinia, and demarcates the border between the municipalities of Orgosolo and Urzulei. In the local language variety, gorropu means a cliff or hollowed out area. The gorge originated as a result of the opening of a fault and through the intense erosive action caused by the waters of the Rio Flumineddu. The Gorropu Gorge, with its walls up to more than 500 m high and a width ranging from 4 meters in the narrowest points to several tens in others, is considered the deepest canyon in Italy and one of the deepest in Europe.
