Church of the Holy Spirit, Ceriana
Facts and practical information
The Old Church of Saints Peter and Paul - erroneously known as the Church of the Holy Spirit - is a Catholic place of worship located in the municipality of Ceriana, in Piazza Santo Spirito, in the province of Imperia. Near the building is the oratory of Saint Catherine of Alexandria.
The foundation of the first church would date from the period between the 11th and 12th centuries; small in size, it probably had exclusive cemetery functions, its location outside the historic center proves this and was originally dedicated to St. Peter. The building was rebuilt, enlarging it, in the late 15th and early 16th centuries with an orientation perpendicular to the old construction. In 1546 it was reconsecrated and dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul, co-owners of the present parish church of the same name in the village, in the diocese of Ventimiglia-San Remo.
