Piazza Giuseppe Verdi, Bologna
Facts and practical information
Piazza Verdi, dedicated to Italian musician Giuseppe Verdi, is a square in the historic center of Bologna, located in the heart of the university area. Cornering the square is Palazzo Paleotti, at 25 Via Zamboni. The square is home to the Teatro Comunale di Bologna, which in turn corners Largo Respighi. On the southwest side runs a section of the walls of the second circle and there stands the apse of the Basilica of San Giacomo Maggiore. On the southeast side, on the other hand, are the former stables of the Bentivoglio family.
In fact, Palazzo Bentivoglio once overlooked it, so much so that the square was named after the noble family itself, until their residence was destroyed in 1506. Later in time, in the 18th century, it was called Piazza di Santa Cecilia, because of the then parish church of Santa Cecilia that faces the same side as San Giacomo. It received its dedication to the famous composer only in 1951.
Coming from the Two Towers along Via Zamboni, the square is reached after passing another square dedicated to a musician, Piazza Rossini, where the Bologna Conservatory of Music is located instead.
The square, especially in the summertime, is used for outdoor cultural events.
