Museo Archeologico della Media Valle del Sele, Eboli
Facts and practical information
The ManES - National Archaeological Museum of Eboli and the Middle Sele Valley, opened March 25, 2000, is a state museum that is part of the Campania Regional Museums Directorate. The ManES is located in the town of Eboli, in the province of Salerno, in the former Convent of St. Francis, a monumental complex founded in the 13th century and extensively remodeled in the 16th and 18th centuries. Before the last World War the complex was used as the seat of the Town Hall, the Magistrate's Court and the local Gymnasium. The bombings of the war led to its partial destruction and abandonment. Renovation works carried out during the 1990s have used it, in part, as a museum venue. The archaeological collections of the ManES have grown with the contributions from excavations conducted in the territory of the Sele Valley, a "middle ground," which, due to its geographical position at the mouth of important transit routes, has always been a meeting place for different peoples and cultures. The exhibition traces the main stages of human settlement in this territory from Prehistory to the Middle Ages and their culture.
