Church of del Carmine, Gargano National Park
Facts and practical information
The Church of the Old Carmine or also called the Carmine Church is a church in Foggia.
The church was built in 1648 by devout masons following a cholera epidemic; it has a Baroque facade typical of the 17th century. In 1740 it was enlarged and a sacristy and oratory were built for the Confraternity, formed in 1702. Damaged by the earthquake, it was repaired and renovated. On the entrance portal is a polychrome pottery of Our Lady. The interior has a single apsidal nave. Three marble altars and rich stucco decorations complete the furnishings. On the high altar of this church is a statue of the Virgin Mary, holding the infant Jesus, who in turn holds the globe with his left hand. The statue, like the facade of the church, certainly recalls the Baroque style of the seventeenth century. In honor of this Madonna, Our Lady of Mount Carmel, there are celebrations in July.
