Temple of Vespasian and Titus, Rome
Facts and practical information
Nestled among the ruins of the Roman Forum stands the Temple of Vespasian and Titus, a monument steeped in ancient history and architectural wonder. This Roman temple was constructed in the 1st century AD to honor the Flavian dynasty's emperors, Vespasian, and his son Titus, both of whom were deified after their deaths.
Although time has weathered its once-majestic facade, the temple's partial remains continue to captivate visitors to Rome, offering a glimpse into the grandeur of the Roman Empire. The temple originally featured a portico with six Corinthian columns along its front, three of which still stand today, soaring skyward and testifying to the temple's former glory.
The structure was erected on the western side of the Forum, near the Tabularium and the Temple of Concord. Its significance is not only architectural but also historical, as it symbolizes the Flavian dynasty's achievements, including the completion of the Colosseum, which Vespasian began and Titus inaugurated.
Throughout the centuries, the temple has undergone various transformations. In the Middle Ages, it was incorporated into a medieval church, which helped preserve some of its elements. However, it wasn't until the Renaissance that the temple's original identity was rediscovered, and archaeological efforts began to reveal its past.
