Cimitero di Santa Maria dei Rotoli, Palermo
Facts and practical information
Santa Maria dei Rotoli Cemetery is located in the Vergine Maria neighborhood in Palermo and is the largest cemetery in the city. It was planted close to Monte Pellegrino in 1837 when, as a result of the cholera epidemic, the cemetery of Sant'Orsola was no longer sufficient to accommodate the bodies. There are monuments and chapels created by leading Palermo sculptors of the time, including Benedetto Civiletti, Pasquale Civiletti and Antonio Ugo, to name but a few.
At one end is the non-Catholic or "Englishmen's" cemetery, a rectangular area enclosed by high walls, where people of other faiths or no faith were buried, both of foreign and Italian origin. Buried there are, among others, some members of the Whitaker family, the Ahrens family, the Lecerf family, Christian Caflisch, and some members of the Noto La Diega family.
