Madonna delle Pianelle, Nimis
Facts and practical information
The shrine of the Madonna delle Pianelle is a small church of Roman Catholic worship located on a small hill just outside Nimis, along the state road leading to Tarcento. It dates back to 1467 and, according to tradition, was built after the apparition of Our Lady and the miracle of the shifting of the foundations; the present building was renovated between 1773 and 1778 and underwent further remodeling later. The facade is surmounted by a tympanum and preceded by a portico redone in 1900. On the left side of the chancel also stands the Sanctuary bell tower, of medium height, with a square plan and open belfry with mullioned windows with two lights.
The small 1896 Zanin organ was recently restored with a contribution from a local foundation.
Inside there are several paintings including The Holy Family by Tita Gori and the high altar which is a votive by Giuseppe Liruti. Following a fire that fortunately did not destroy the church, on the night of September 9, 2018, the altarpiece on the right altar, depicting St. Oswald, St. Valentine and St. Nicholas, painted by Giulio Antonio Manin in 1786, was devoured by flames. In 2019 the church underwent restoration and cleaning work to repair the fire damage. Manin's altarpiece was returned to its place by means of a canvas print, and the church was cleared of smoke that had darkened the frescoes.
