Margherita Hut
Facts and practical information
Perched high in the Italian Alps, the Margherita Hut stands as a testament to human tenacity and the spirit of mountaineering. At an astonishing elevation of 4,554 meters, it is the highest alpine hut in Europe, offering shelter and respite to climbers braving the rugged peaks of the Monte Rosa massif.
Constructed in 1893, the Margherita Hut is named after Queen Margherita of Savoy, who was the first to stay overnight. This remarkable structure is not just a haven for climbers but also serves as a high-altitude research station, where scientists can study the effects of extreme altitude on the human body as well as conduct meteorological and environmental research.
Access to the hut is a feat in itself, requiring climbers to traverse glaciers and negotiate steep ascents. Despite its remote location, the hut provides essential amenities, such as warm meals and beds, crucial for mountaineers acclimatizing or seeking refuge from the harsh alpine conditions.
