Montagna Longa
Facts and practical information
Montagna Longa is a mountain near Carini in the province of Palermo and separates the towns of Cinisi and Carini. Its height is 975 meters above sea level and belongs to the Palermo Mountains mountain group. The mountain is located between the territory of Carini, Cinisi and Terrasini, near the Punta Raisi Airport and is provided with a state-owned picnic area.
At the top is a cross, in memory of the 115 victims of the Alitalia Flight 112 air disaster on May 5, 1972.
Due to its height and location, it is used by the Sicilian Regional Forestry Department, for fire spotting and by radio and television broadcasters for the installation of their repeaters. The path leading to the summit starts from the Santa Venera forest and winds for almost 6 km. The cross overlooking the mountain was placed on the first anniversary of the 1972 air disaster. Almost at the summit, Palermo archaeologist Mannino has found ruins of lookout posts of probable Carthaginian origin.
