Colle della Grottaccia, Elba

Facts and practical information
La Grottaccia is a relief on the island of Elba, reaching an altitude of 647 meters above sea level.
The site is a short distance from the Walls and is home to a large pastoral quarter used by Sanpierese shepherd Umbertino Martorella in the mid-20th century and later by Santilari shepherd Guido Martorella. Following a collapse due to a collision between two goats, the vault of the hut was rebuilt by shepherd Antonietto Batignani. It is located between Campitini and Le Mure. The place name originates from a shelter located between the cliffs and frequented since the Bronze Age. Vegetation includes Genista desoleana, Pteridium aquilinum and small shrubs of Quercus ilex.
