Castel Pietra, Calliano
Facts and practical information
Castel Pietra is located in Calliano. The manor house is located on the slope of the Beseno Castle ridge, and is built on a huge boulder detached from the Red Ash, hence its name.
Since the 13th century it has depended on Castel Beseno, in the hands of the Da Beseno family. It is located in a strategic position: in fact, it long marked the border between the Italian Tyrolean territories and the Episcopal Principality of Trent, and between it and the Republic of Venice. When the Venetians attempted to push north between the 15th and 16th centuries, they were stopped by the Principality and the Austrians in major pitched battles that took place near the castle.
Its rooms present a Gothic style. Important medieval relics can be found inside: the "Hall of Judgment," a strictly Gothic room lit by windows with the distinctive Guelph shape and adorned with 15th-century frescoes, is noteworthy.
The castle was restored with the financial support of the Autonomous Province of Trento, and today it is privately owned and inhabited.
