Castello di San Giorio
Facts and practical information
The castle of San Giorio dominates the middle Susa Valley from the rocky spur where the village of San Giorio di Susa stands, about 45 km from the capital city of Turin. Among the most conspicuous castles in the Susa Valley for those passing through the area, its remains visible today, namely the round tower and flanking hall, are only part of a much larger and imposing complex whose function was to control the transit of merchants and armies along the Valley. Largely demolished during the 18th century, with further collapse during the 20th, it is currently under restoration.
