The Carlo Franchetti refuge is the highest mountain refuge among those located on the Gran Sasso of Italy, located at 2,433 meters above sea level, on the Teramo side of the massif, in the territory of the municipality of Pietracamela, above the locality of Prati di Tivo, wedged between the Corno Grande and Corno Piccolo, in the glacial valley known as Vallone delle Cornacchie.
