Faro di Rio Marina, Rio Marina
Facts and practical information
The Rio Marina Lighthouse is a decommissioned Piombino Channel maritime lighthouse that was located along the outer quay of the port of Rio Marina, along the east coast of the island of Elba.
The lighthouse, inaugurated in 1914 to illuminate the harbor and the coastal stretch of Rio Marina, was commissioned by the Royal Navy and remained in operation until 1960, when work was carried out to extend the pier, which necessitated the activation of a modern lighthouse at its new end, resulting in the decommissioning of the monumental lighthouse that had become inadequate as a result of the modernization of the port infrastructure.
The lighthouse lantern, now removed, stood on top of a small neo-medieval style tower with a hexagonal cross-section with an inner gallery and crowning summit with round arches on which rests a characteristic battlement. The base of the tower is located above a cliff that once marked the end of the pier. The wall structures of the tower are faced with brick, while the crowning and battlements of the top are plastered.
The gateway to the tower is preceded by a staircase that fits the cliff below.
