Santuario Madonna dell'acqua, Pisa
Facts and practical information
The Church of the Santissima Concezione, also known as the Sanctuary of the Madonna dell'Acqua, is located in Madonna dell'Acqua, a hamlet of the municipality of San Giuliano Terme, in the province of Pisa.
Built in 1647 by engineer Stefano Maruscelli, the small church rose on the right bank of the Dead River on the site of a shrine with an image of Our Lady, now preserved on the main altar, that miraculously saved the population from a flood.
The sober and modest appearance of the exterior brick cladding, softened by the portico on the façade, contrasts with the interior decoration consisting of stucco, gilding and a valuable cycle of 18th-century frescoes, with Scenes from the Life of Mary and allegorical figures, the result of the collaboration of Giovanni Battista Tempesti and Mattia Tarocchi from Pisa. Also of interest are the three altar frontals with depictions of the Theological Virtues.
