Castello del Malconsiglio, Miglionico
Facts and practical information
Malconsiglio Castle is the castle of Miglionico, built on a hill in the town from the 8th-9th centuries in a strategic position, known for hosting the Conjuring of the Barons in 1485. It had two successive extensions, the first in 1110 and the second in 1400. It has the shape of a parallelogram, flanked by seven towers, some square, two bitorri and others circular, placed at the vertices of the building.
The present entrance faces northeast, while the original one destroyed in the Basilicata earthquake of 1857 faced south. Inside, specifically on the upper floor, are the androeceum and gynaeceum, the hall of the Malconsiglio, where the conspiracy was held, and the hall of the Stella or of the Spirits, the most beautiful and secret part of the castle, with a star ceiling and with chests where the most precious treasures and documents were kept.
It belonged over time to Count Alessandro of Andria, the Sanseverino family of Bisignano, Ettore Fieramosca, the Pignatelli family, the Caracciolo family and the Revertera family, dukes of Salandra.
