Pieve di Santo Stefano
Facts and practical information
The parish church of St. Stephen is a church located in the hamlet of Cesclans in the municipality of Cavazzo Carnico, one of the 11 ancient parish churches of Carnia, currently a branch of the parish church of Cavazzo Carnico.
It stands 384 m above sea level on a rocky cliff overlooking Lake Cavazzo below. The 1976 earthquake almost completely destroyed the previous building, leaving only the bell tower standing. After the earthquake, reconstruction began in 1993, attempting to restore the earlier forms; the church was reopened for worship in 2008. The earliest settlement would date back to the 9th or 10th century, there were later remodels until the present forms that date from 1777.
