Terme Achilliane, Catania
Facts and practical information
Achillian baths refer to underground thermal structures dating from the 4th-5th centuries located in Catania of which only a small portion remains visible under Piazza del Duomo.
The thermal environment is accessed through a barrel-vaulted corridor carved out of the cavity between the foundations of the cathedral, access to which is preceded by a downward ramp to the right of the cathedral's facade. The name of the facility is deduced from an inscription on a slab of lunense marble that has been reduced to six main fragments, datable to the first half of the 5th century, now on display inside the Civic Museum at Castello Ursino.
