Chiesa dei Santi Gregorio e Valentino, Caldarola
Facts and practical information
The church of Saints Gregory and Valentine is located on Pallotta Street in Caldarola, Macerata province.
It is a single-nave building with side chapels and chancel; the hall is entirely plastered and painted; on the side walls runs the interior cornice with stucco moldings and painted decorations. The high altar, monumental the polychrome wood with gilding, contains the canvas depicting Saints Gregory and Valentine.
On the choir walls, included within two niches are two funerary monuments dedicated one to Varino Favorino and the other to Ludovico Clodio. The creation of these two monuments can be ascribed to the neo-romantic taste that animated Count Pallotta. The Chapel of the Rosary preserves the oil painting of Our Lady of the Rosary attributed to G. A. De Magistris. The figure of the Virgin is on a cylindrical throne with regal bearing, her golden robe and starry tunic. The Child moves and blesses with childlike tenderness while the saints are vigorous in their movement. The scene is completed by the angels carrying the throne. The numerous depictions of Our Lady of the Rosary with the Mysteries around it are due to the institution of the feast of the Rosary made following the victory at Lepanto in 1571.
The paintings on the walls of the chapel, represent the last work of the painter Augusto Mussini. The decorative scheme is that of the Sorrowful, Joyful and Glorious Mysteries and consists of decorative bundles of roses that, from eight ancient vases placed two by two at the bases of the corners, rise to the ceiling, turn on the arches and rejoin as a garland supported by four angels and from the festoons expand over a bright sky, jagged with white clouds. The Sorrowful Mysteries, at the bottom, on the stylobate, are symbolized by a frieze of earthly and heavenly figures expressing sorrow in the red hue that recalls the blood of passion. This is followed by the Joyful Mysteries symbolized by yellow where figures of luminous angels wandering in the sky become more and more incorporeal. The Glorious Mysteries are redolent of a luminous vision with a myriad of putti in bold movements and smiling faces expressing the glory of the heavens.
The crucifix on the altar of the Blessed Sacrament from the late Renaissance period was donated by Giovanni Barlesi. The funeral monument dedicated to Ludovico Clodio following damage to the wall containing it, as well as the chapel painted by Mussini, the wooden retable of the high altar, and the chapel of the Blessed Sacrament were restored during the restoration carried out to repair damage caused by the 1997 earthquake.
