Santi Pietro e Ilario, Castiglion Fibocchi
Facts and practical information
The Church of Saints Peter and Hilary is a Catholic place of worship located at 5 Via del Fosso in Castiglion Fibocchi.
Originally an ancient castle chapel, it is mentioned in 1304 as dependent on the parish of San Quirico Sopr'Arno. In the mid-17th century it was elevated to a parish church, and in 1857, completely rebuilt and enlarged beyond the walls, it was declared an archpriesthood. The gabled facade is a Classicist-style reconstruction from the 1930s. On the left stands the late 19th-century bell tower, built on the remains of the old civic tower. The interior preserves a portion of a fresco depicting the Madonna Enthroned with Child.
The image, detached in solid form from a building in the area, is attributed to Agnolo di Lorentino, son of Lorentino d'Andrea, one of Piero della Francesca's most faithful collaborators.
