Chiesa del Monte dei Morti, Salerno
Facts and practical information
The Church of the Mount of the Dead is located in Salerno and stands in the historic center, in Largo Plebiscito.
There are four churches in Salerno that have the typical elements of Renaissance sacred buildings: the church of San Salvatore de Fondaco, located along Via Mercanti; the church of Sant'Anna al Porto, near the Giuseppe Verdi Theater; the chapel of San Filippo Neri, at the former Capuchin monastery, close to the city's ancient eastern walls; and the church of Monte dei Morti at Largo Plebiscito near the ancient Porta Rotese. All with an octagonal plan, they underwent subsequent remodeling, especially in the Baroque era, which, however, did not change the original interior enclosure. The same octagonal matrix had led the Salerno architect Alfonso Gambardella, to speculate for S. Salvatore, S. Anna and the Monte dei Morti plans drawn up by the same architect, who allegedly used the Monte dei Morti church as a model. The thesis, unconfirmed by the sources, would find confirmation in the chronology of the building of the sacred institutions, since the church of the Mount of the Dead was built in 1530, that of S. Anna in the late 16th century, and that of S. Salvatore acquired its octagonal shape between 1582 and 1584.
