Cattedrale di San Michele Arcangelo, Bitetto
Facts and practical information
The church of San Michele Arcangelo, built in the 11th century, is the main monument in Bitetto and represents one of the purest examples of Apulian Romanesque.
Numerous renovations over the centuries led to the building's enlargement: in fact, the Romanesque-style main body was flanked by two side chapels dedicated to the Blessed Sacrament and Purgatory. The cathedral is also adorned with a Baroque-style bell tower.
The church served as the cathedral of the diocese of Bitetto, which, born in the 11th century, existed until June 27, 1818, when, with the bull De utiliori Pope Pius VII, in his program to reorganize the dioceses of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, decreed its suppression and annexation to the archdiocese of Bari. Since 1968, however, the diocese has been a titular see.
The building is currently the seat of the parish of St. Michael the Archangel.
