Pieve di San Zeno
Facts and practical information
The church of San Zeno is a religious building located on the northern outskirts of the town of Cerea, in the province of Verona, more precisely on the road from the center of the town toward Bovolone, along Via San Zeno, named so because of the presence of the Romanesque church.
Beginning in the 12th century, with the construction of an additional church in the town center of Cerea, dedicated to Santa Maria, it was feared that the ancient church of San Zeno would be abandoned and neglected, but thanks to the people of Cerea, it has survived the wear and tear of the centuries to the present day.
It was built almost entirely of brick, with rows of thicker bricks alternating with thinner rows that created a special coloristic effect, almost a vibration of the surfaces.
The current appearance of the church is the result of the last restoration, carried out in 1910: the walls of the nave and the facade were raised, which took on a salient profile, varying from the previous gabled one.
