St. Stephen Church, Anghiari
Facts and practical information
St. Stephen's Church is a sacred building located on Via della Battaglia in Anghiari.
It is a very ancient building of worship, an example of early medieval architecture with clear features of Byzantine-Ravenna influence. The church is located outside the town walls and more precisely at the beginning of the plain that reaches as far as Sansepolcro. It consists of a central nucleus with a square plan, on the sides of which are three projecting apses and a four-sided body with the function of an entrance. Inside, the columns with Ionic capitals are Roman elements of perusal. Contrasting are the interpretations on the function and chronology of this church.
More likely appears to be the hypothesis that it was a Catholic church built in the Lombard age by the monks of St. Columbanus, as opposed to another, now disappeared, of Arian worship.
The 15th-century panel painting inside, depicting the Madonna and Child with Saints by Florentine painter Domenico di Michelino, unfortunately affected by the 66' flood, is valuable.
