Rocca di Somasca, Vercurago

The Castle of the Unnamed, so named because of the character of the same name from The Betrothed, is a 14th-century fortified complex located on the border between the municipalities of Vercurago and Lecco on the summit of Sacro Monte di Somasca at about 185 m a.s.l. Until 1802, the castle belonged to the Duchy of Milan-Diocese of Milan-Circumcondario di Lecco along with the village of Somasca and Malanotte. Vercurago was Serenissima Republic-Diocese of Bergamo and Mandamento of Bergamo. In 1802 Somasca and Vercurago were united into a single municipality by permanently including them in the Diocese of Bergamo and the Circondario di Bergamo. With the establishment of the Province of Lecco, in 1992 the entire municipality is part of the Province of Lecco.

The castle stands on a limestone hill known as the "Tremasasso" because of its landslides and inhabited since the early Iron Age by the Golasecca culture. Probably of early medieval origin, in the 13th century the castle was owned by the Benaglio family, vassals of the Della Torre family of Milan and then became part of the possessions of the Republic of Venice after the peace of Lodi. With the arrival of the Spanish in Lombardy, the castle was snatched along with Malanotte and Somasca, incorporating them into the Duchy of Milan. Vercurago remained in the Serenissima Republic. The castle was destroyed several times and after being razed to the ground in 1799 during Suvorov's Italian campaign it was partially rebuilt by the Somaschi fathers in the late 19th century.
