Centrale Montemartini Museum, Rome
Facts and practical information
The Giovanni Montemartini Thermoelectric Power Station was a thermoelectric power plant in Rome's Ostiense district, later decommissioned and used as a museum as a subsection of the Capitoline Museums.
Located on the Via Ostiense, it was inaugurated on June 30, 1912, and became the first electric generating plant of the Azienda Elettrica Municipale. Named after former alderman Giovanni Montemartini, who died in the council chamber during a debate in 1913, the plant was later decommissioned in 1963. After about thirty years of neglect and various uses, the spaces of the power plant were restored by Acea and began to house the second branch of the Capitoline Museums starting in 1997.
