Museo della Stampa, Iesi
Facts and practical information
The Studio per le Arti della Stampa is located in Jesi. Jesi was one of the first towns to introduce the art of printing to Italy: in 1472, in fact, the town's first printing workshop was established. It was run by Federico de' Conti, a typographer from Verona who moved to the Marche region with his family between 1470 and 1471. In his print shop in Jesolo he produced one of the first printed editions of the Divine Comedy, a reproduction of which is on display today at the SAS.
To document this tradition, which continued into the 20th century, the SAS was established in the Palazzo Pianetti Vecchio. Here, after the family moved to Palazzo Pianetti, a convent of Poor Clare nuns was housed. The museum is set up partly in the refectory of the former Poor Clare convent and partly in the Baroque-style church of St. Bernard.
These include printing presses of various eras and fashions, machines for lithography, intaglio, and xylography, and fine books, from incunabula to examples from the 1800s. The machines come from the print shop in Jesolo run in the 1900s by the Diotallevi family and others from neighboring towns. The museum has a partially searchable archive in which 20th-century posters of the city of Jesi and numerous caricatures and works by Duilio Diotallevi, who ran the print shop that was based in the building in 1900, are housed.
