The Medici fortress of San Martino is located at San Piero a Sieve in the municipality of Scarperia and San Piero in Mugello, north of Florence. With about 1.5 kilometers of perimeter,17,000 square meters of wall area and a complex area of 65,000 square meters, it is one of the largest extra-urban fortresses in Europe, surpassed only by the Fortress of Fenestrelle and the Fortress of San Ferran in Figueres, although these complexes are of much more recent date.
