Black Moor
Facts and practical information
Black Moor, or in German "Schwarzes Moor", is a natural jewel located in the mountainous region of the Bavarian Forest, near the border between Germany and the Czech Republic. This area, known for its harsh landscape and unique biological diversity, is home to one of the most impressive peatland habitats in Europe.
The Black Moor peatland is a delicate and vital ecosystem that plays a crucial role in carbon dioxide sequestration and maintaining water balance. This highland landscape, covering approximately 50 hectares, consists of a dense network of peat bogs, ponds, and streams that are the result of thousands of years of accumulated plant matter.
This place is not only important from an ecological point of view but is also a popular destination for nature lovers and hikers. Visitors can explore Black Moor using wooden trails that allow immersion in the heart of the peatland without disturbing its delicate ecosystem. Along these trails, one can observe diverse plant species adapted to the moist and acidic environmental conditions, as well as varied fauna, including rare birds and other wild animals.
