Dornhaldenfriedhof, Stuttgart
Facts and practical information
The 9-hectare Dornhaldenfriedhof is a cemetery established in 1974 in Stuttgart-Degerloch. It is one of the cemeteries in the forest with large stands of hornbeams, acacias and oaks.
The cemetery is located opposite the forest cemetery on the site of the former Dornhalde shooting range of the Royal Garrison of Stuttgart, which had nine 400-meter shooting lanes. There are still some evidence of the former shooting range operation: A forest parcel in the vicinity is called "Schießbahn 10/4". Near the shooting range begins the forest path Schießbahnweg, which turns into Dornhaldenweg leading to the Dornhalden cemetery. In the cemetery, two longitudinal ramparts of the former shooting range, which used to separate the shooting lanes, are still visible. The shortened remnant of one rampart lies next to the cemetery halls, the other rampart, still preserved in its original length, starts near the shooting house and runs to the end of the cemetery.
The cemetery became famous in 1977 as the burial place for RAF terrorists Andreas Baader, Gudrun Ensslin and Jan-Carl Raspe, who were buried there despite protests by the mayor at the time, Manfred Rommel.
In 1980, RAF members Juliane Plambeck and Wolfgang Beer, who were killed in a car accident, were also buried here; however, their gravesites no longer exist today. RAF member Horst Ludwig Meyer was also buried in the Dornhalden Cemetery in 1999.
The Dornhalden Cemetery also contains the gravesites of the following personalities: Max Bense, philosopher, Margarete Hannsmann, writer, Peter O. Chotjewitz, writer
On the northern edge of the Dornhalden Cemetery is the listed Garrison Rifle House from 1880 and 1893, respectively, which is owned by the City of Stuttgart. The main building housed the canteen and target workshop of the shooting range of the Royal Garrison of Stuttgart and has been vacant since 2009.
