Santuario della "Via Crucis"
Facts and practical information
The shrine of the Way of the Cross is a building located next to the parish church in Cerveno, Val Camonica, containing an 18th-century wooden Way of the Cross.
The sanctuary fits into the Lombardy-Piedmont tradition of Sacred Mountains: it is arranged along a stepped corridor that culminates at the summit with the Chapel of the Deposition.
On the sides, arranged in niches, are the 14 stations containing 198 life-size wood and plaster statues by Camuno sculptor Beniamino Simoni.
The work was commissioned on January 1, 1752, from Beniamino Simoni of Fresine, an artist of the Fantoni school, by Don Andrea Boldini, parish priest of Cerveno.
The work lasted until 1764, when, due to continuous quarrels between the artist against the parish and the inhabitants of Cerveno, the work was finished by Donato and Grazioso Fantoni, who completed Stations VIII, IX and possibly X.
For the pictorial part, the first paintings appear to be assigned to Bernardino" Albrici of Vilminore di Scalve, later there appear to be payments made to the painters Paolo Corbellini and Giosuè Scotti; while the paintings in the tomb chapel are attributed to Giuliano Volpi from Lovere.
Every ten years, on a Sunday in May, residents put on a living Passion play.
